"What has to happen?" Kyle Sandilands' controversial take after knife attacks

Kyle Sandilands has shared his controversial opinion on arming security guards in the wake of two violent stabbing attacks in Sydney.

On Saturday, six people were killed at the hands of Joel Cauchi who went on a stabbing rampage through Bondi Junction Westfield, while on Monday night, a teenage boy stabbed a bishop and a priest during a church service in western Sydney.

One of Joel Cauchi's victims was Faraz Tahir, a security guard at the shopping centre, while another guard was injured during the rampage.

In the days after the eastern suburbs tragedy, Kyle, who has a connection to one of the people injured during Cauchi's attack, launched into a tirade live on-air, calling for security guards to be given firearms.

"I saw the [NSW] premier [Chris Minns] last night on TV saying firearms for security guards are not on the agenda. And I was like, 'Well, what has to happen before a security guard can actually secure the place for us?'" Sandilands raged.

"Every shopping centre and every school should have armed security guards, trained specialists, not just some guy getting a little firearms licence. I mean, proper trained."

Most retail security staff in NSW are unarmed, with batons classified as prohibited weapons that require special licensing and training.

"There's people that work at Westfield, for example, women that work in shops that have told their husbands, 'I ain't never going back to Westfield. I'm never going back to work again'," Sandilands continued, adding that those retail workers are "traumatised forever" following Saturday's stabbings.

Sandilands' opinions have been echoed by fellow controversial broadcaster Ray Hadley, who on Monday demanded on his 2GB Sydney radio show that security guards be armed across the state.

"For years I've been arguing that all security guards in the state in hospitals and shopping centres should be better equipped," he said.

"And these poor security guards, unarmed, unable to do what they should do - protecting the people that they are there to protect."

Kyle Sandilands' family member among first victims stabbed in Bondi

Kyle Sandilands became emotional as he described how his wife’s relative Yvonne Wineberg was one of the first women targeted during the terrifying stabbing attack at Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday.

Speaking to co-host Jackie “O” Henderson and newsreader Brooklyn Ross, on The Kyle & Jackie O show Monday morning, Sandilands revealed: “One of the first women to get stabbed in the shoulder was a family member of ours.

“She’s a very close family member to my wife.

“So, we were watching it on TV, and saw one of our families were involved and carted off to hospital.”

He also said that a Bondi lifeguard, who was trapped in Myer during the incident after the store had pulled down their shutters to keep shoppers safe, had asked to be let out so he could help Wineberg.

“He could see our family member that got stabbed laying on the ground. There was so much blood.

“He said, ‘if I don’t get to her, she’s losing too much blood’, so they let him out, and he rendered assistance before the paramedics arrived.”

Sandilands didn't name the lifeguard, but shared the horrors the lifeguard witnessed during the attack.

“He said every 50 foot there was another person laying in a pile of blood — all the way down the mall,” the KIIS FM star said.

Wineberg was released from hospital on Sunday afternoon.

NSW Police identified Joel Cauchi as the killer on Sunday.

He was fatally shot just minutes after he left six dead and 12 injured during the terrifying attack at the shopping centre on Saturday night.

Cauchi's parents have spoken out and expressed their devastation and disbelief at their son's actions, describing the attack as "truly horrific".

They also said that they "have no issues with the police officer who shot our son as she was only doing her job to protect others and we hope she is coping alright.”

Cauchi's victims included Pikria Darchia, 55, Ashlee Good, 38; Faraz Tahir, 30; Dawn Singleton, 25; Jade Young, 47; and Yixuan Cheng, 25.

A dozen others – mostly women – were also injured, including Good’s nine-month old baby girl.

Images: 7NEWS

Kyle Sandilands lashes out at Robert Irwin

Kyle Sandilands has let rip at Robert Irwin, after the young wildlife warrior was crowned Australia's Top Broadcast Talent.

In a survey conducted by Lewers Research, 7,000 Aussies were quizzed over their attitudes towards top Australian celebrities, actors, broadcasters, and others.

Irwin was named Australia's Top Broadcast Talent, beating out last year's winner, Hamish Blake, as well as Andy Lee, Dr Chris Brown, Ally Langdon and Natalie Barr, to name just a few.

The 20-year-old I'm a Celeb co-host also came out on top in the Top 10 Male Talent list.

"We were excited to see Robert Irwin top the Talent Index for the very first time. It demonstrates that he is significantly more liked than disliked by audiences nationally," Talent Corp Managing Director Mark Noakes.

"That makes him a great choice for Network 10 to cast him in the forthcoming series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!"

Clearly unhappy with Irwin's victory, Kyle Sandilands was quick to slam the decision to crown the wildlife warrior, sharing his anger with the listeners of the Kyle and Jackie O Show.

"The b**** has done nothing. It’s a sympathy vote," he said.

Sandilands, who was named the most controversial broadcaster in the survey, then poked fun at co-host Jackie O, who scored 59 out of 100 on the "likability" scale.

"You're liked? I find that hard to understand," he joked.

Despite the radio host's protests, Irwin shared how honoured he was to be named Australia's Top Broadcast Talent, taking to social media to thank his fans for always supporting him.

"Wow, it’s a real honour to officially be named Australia’s most popular broadcast personality," he said on Instagram.

"I’m here to spread important messages and a bit of positivity with the world, so this commendation means so much. I’m humbled and grateful."

"Who cares?": Kyle Sandilands backs Sam Kerr

Kyle Sandilands has weighed in on Matildas captain Sam Kerr's court battle, after it was alleged that she called a police officer in London a "stupid white b*****d" during a dispute over a taxi fare.

Sandilands was quick to defend the Matildas captain during the Kyle And Jackie O show on Tuesday and insisted that calling someone that didn't warrant a criminal conviction.

"It's not even a big deal. She call some guy 'white b*****d'. Who cares?" the 52-year-old shock jock said.

"White b******s don't care about that. That's for the other races to worry about," he added, before newsreader Brooklyn Ross quickly changed the topic.

Kerr, 30, is preparing to face a four-day trial next February, following the incident that occurred after a night out in Twickenham on January 30, 2023.

The football star appeared in a London court on Monday after she was accused of using insulting, threatening or abusive words that caused alarm or distress to the officer.

Kerr has maintained her innocence, pleading not guilty to the charges brought against her.

Her legal team hope to have the case thrown out when they return to court next month.

In response to the controversy, the sport's governing body Football Australia (FA) said that while they were aware of the legal proceedings, they didn't know about the charges laid against Kerr.

"As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to provide further comment at this time. Our focus remains on supporting all our players, both on and off the field. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide support as appropriate," they said in a statement.

Images: Kyle and Jackie O show/ Getty

"We've all gone": Why Jackie O stormed off set

Jackie O Henderson has marched out of KIIS FM in the middle of The Kyle and Jackie O show, after finding out that the station has the highest gender pay gap disparity across Australian radio.

“Southern Cross Austereo has a disgraceful 5.9% pay gap. At Nova and Smooth FM it is even worse, six per cent." Kyle Sandilands told listeners on Tuesday.

"But unfortunately, the number one spot is at KIIS FM, – at the top of the tree with a 12% pay gap disparity.”

Sandilands, who famously fought for Henderson to secure equal pay on their radio program, then brought on one of the show’s producers Pete Deppeler and another female KIIS FM producer, who revealed she was only being paid half of what Deppeler was.

“Are you freaking joking? Why is Peter getting that much money? I’m so angry about that, it makes my blood boil,” Henderson replied.

She then left the studios with all her female colleagues.

“We’ve all gone,” she said.

"We are just here with the fellas. I don’t know whether I am enjoying this, bring the girls back!” Sandilands told listeners.

On Tuesday, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency published the gender pay gap for more than 5,000 Australian companies.

This was done after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ordered the information to be made public for the first time ever, so the data can be compared within and across industries.

The new data revealed that the national gap for total remuneration sits at 19 per cent and the median Australian female worker is taking home $18,461 less than their male counterpart.

Despite a few criticisms on Albanese's decision to publicise this data, Workplace Minister Tony Burke has said that releasing this data is effective.

“People on this side know that releasing that sort of data is effective and you will only find in the other side of politics anyone arguing that it is useless,‘’ he said.

“The days of secretly paying women less than men are now over.”

Images: Kyle and Jacki O Show

Kyle Sandilands abandons radio show after nasty accident

Kyle Sandilands was forced to abandon his daily radio show on Wednesday morning, after a nasty accident prevented him from heading into the studio.

KIISFM was forced to play a pre-recorded episode of the Kyle and Jackie O Show, as just moments before he was set to go on air, Sandilands took a tumble down the stairs.

Kyle took Thursday off the show as well to recover from his accident, but called in to speak to his co-host Jackie O to share what happened.

“I fell from the top of my internal staircase and rolled, rattled and bumped all the way to the bottom, and I was left splayed out like a Christmas dinner,” Sandilands said.

“It’s a big marble staircase, very wide and very long, and in some design flaw, the light [switch] is at the bottom, not at the top, it was pitch black and my foot went,” he added.

Sandilands said he was home alone at the time, with his wife Tegan Kynaston and their one-year-old son Otto spending the night away.

“So the normal routine wasn’t happening, the nanny wasn’t there because the baby wasn’t there, and the lighting situation wasn’t sorted out,” Sandilands said.

“I carry everything in [my] hat, my wallet, keys, cigarettes … That all went everywhere, and I was left at the bottom of the floor.”

“I was so injured I thought, ‘That’s it for me. This is the beginning of the end.’”

While he said he was left “rattled” by the accident, Sandilands went on to confirm he was doing “fine” now, and was hoping to be back on the air for Friday morning’s show.

Kyle Sandilands reacts to Ozempic claims

Kyle Sandilands has been forced to address rumours that he is taking Ozempic, after returning from the holiday break with a noticeably slimmed down figure.

The radio host faced the accusations of taking the weight loss drug live on air on Thursday, after the mother of a staff member made the comments.

Newsreader Brooklyn Ross told Kyle, “My mum asked me if you're on Ozempic, Kyle,” prompting a laugh from Sandilands.

“Me? What have I done?" Kyle questioned, surprised as Jackie laughed, telling him it was his turn to be hit with the rumour.

"You're losing weight, my mum thinks you're on Ozempic!" Brooklyn said.

Showing a picture of the media personality looking very slimmed down just weeks apart, Kyle said, “It's just a good angle of me.”

Further denying the rumours, he added, “Maybe I've stopped eating as much bread and drinking Coca Cola.”

Co-host Jackie O quickly jumped to her colleague's defence, saying, “You always come back from the [Christmas] break a little bit skinnier because you've been healthier, by the sun, you're less into the twelve coffees.”

Kyle interjected to share his wife’s impact on his weight loss saying, “And my wife - I go, ‘Can you bring me a chocolate paddle pop?’ and a salad shows up.”

“And I get angry... but I just eat it anyway because it's been given to me.”

"You do look good," Jackie told him. "Keep it going, get on the Ozempic!"

"I don't care about being some thin flop!" Kyle hit back.

Brooklyn also shared that his mum believed Jackie had been taking the weight loss drug, to which she responded, "I can't convince anyone, can I? Like I don't care, but I just wish that people would know that if I was I'd just say it at this point."

Jackie O has long been denying rumours of using Ozempic in the wake of her drastic weight loss, which she credits to being an ambassador for Weight Watchers.

"I'm not myself": The real reason why Kyle Sandilands stormed off the show

Jackie O Henderson has revealed the real reason why her co-host, Kyle Sandilands, walked out just 11 minutes into their hit breakfast show on Tuesday morning.

The shock jock was nowhere to be seen on Wednesday, so Jackie O had to explain his absence.

One of their producers revealed that Sandilands had been "struggling with his shoulder."

"He sent me a message saying, 'Honey, I'm so sorry. I'm on medication and I'm not myself. I'm in so much pain," Henderson said.

"I actually feel so bad for him," admitted the radio star.

Sandilands had recently injured his rotator cuff and was prescribed Oxycodone to manage the pain.

A few of the side effects of using the painkiller can include light-headedness, confusion and unusual tiredness or weakness.

Henderson also admitted that she may have pushed him off the edge during their discussion about Covid-19 yesterday, as she had reportedly cussed him out.

"Calling him a c**ksucker was the turning point," she said.

Their argument had escalated into name-calling before Sandilands stormed out.

Sandilands had previously used the derogatory term to attack newsreader Brooklyn Ross, and he couldn't when his co-host used the same insult back at him.

This incident comes almost a week into the radio duo signing a record-breaking $200 million 10-year deal on air.

Image: Kyle and Jackie O Show/ Instagram

Kyle Sandilands storms out of studio after argument with Jackie O

Kyle Sandilands has stormed off his hit KIIS FM radio program after an argument with his co-host Jackie O Henderson over Covid-19.

Sandilands stormed off just 11 minutes into the show on Tuesday morning, after bringing up that NSW Premier Chris Minns had cancelled his appearance on their show after testing positive to the virus.

The argument sparked when Henderson downplayed the seriousness of the virus and said it was "just like the flu".

Sandilands hit back saying that Henderson would probably still isolate if she caught the virus, considering how cautious she was in the past.

"I'm allowed to change my opinion," Henderson shot back.

Sandilands then argued that she should have some "consistency" in her opinions, before declaring that he was going home and storming out of the studio.

"Well that escalated quickly," a stunned Henderson said.

Not long after their Executive producer Pedro Vitola confirmed that the radio host had gone home.

"What's happening today?" Henderson asked.

"I'm telling you this full moon, it messes with people," she added referring to what astrologers call the full moon in Gemini, which they believe is a period when people are a bit more restless and rife with misunderstandings.

It is unclear whether Henderson also went home as it is reported that the show has been playing repeats of old segments.

Images: Instagram/ KIIS FM

Kyle Sandilands leaves brutal voicemail for Steve Price

In the latest episode of "Australia's Got Voicemails", shock jock extraordinaire Kyle Sandilands unleashed a verbal tempest upon fellow broadcaster Steve Price. What sparked this war of words? Apparently, Price had the audacity to label Sandilands a "grubby buffoon" on national television. And you thought your family gatherings were awkward.

Let's rewind to the moment when Price, with all the subtlety of a kangaroo in a china shop, decided to throw some shade on The Project. With the finesse of a wordsmith, Price declared, "I don't think grubby buffoons work in Melbourne." Ouch. Melbourne, known for its coffee, culture, and now apparently, a grubby buffoon ban.

In response, Sandilands, not one to be outdone in the art of verbal gymnastics, left Price a voicemail that would make a sailor blush. "Hey, you piece of sh*t," Sandilands began, setting the tone for a heartfelt exchange of pleasantries, "we’ve spoken before, last time you forgot that you’re not allowed to mouth off about me.

“Steve, it’s Kyle obviously, there is probably a long list of people who ring you.

“Again just surprised at your feigned reaction on The Project, can’t you just be yourself? Can’t you just say your true thoughts? I can’t wait to see you face-to-face buddy, it’s been too long.

“It’s disappointing that as you’ve gotten older you have turned into a real piece of sh*t. Feel free to play this on tonight’s Project because that’s the last gig you will ever have.

"See you mate, by the way love the alcoholic nose, bye bro.”

Despite the verbal thrashing, Price seemed unconcerned. "I described him as a grubby buffoon, and that's it," Price retorted, probably sipping tea and counting the days until the next headline-grabbing voicemail. It's all in a day's work for a grizzled commentator who's clearly impervious to verbal beatdowns.

In the grand tradition of radio feuds, this clash of titans unfolded after Sandilands and his partner-in-crime, Jackie 'O' Henderson, inked a jaw-dropping $200 million deal live on air.

As the radio waves settle from this tempestuous encounter, we can't help but marvel at the drama that unfolds in the seemingly mundane world of talk radio. Who needs reality TV when you have Australian broadcasters providing this level of entertainment?

In the end, whether it's a buffoon's brawl or a radio roast, one thing's for sure – the Australian airwaves are never short of surprises. Tune in next time for another episode of He Said, He Said, where words are sharper than claws, and feuds are settled with voicemails, not handshakes.

Images: Network Ten / KIIS FM

Steve Price slams "buffoon" Kyle Sandilands over move to Melbourne airwaves

The radio waves have been rocked once again after Steve Price, a man with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, dubbed fellow radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands a "grubby buffoon".

The saga unfolded as Sandilands and his radio partner-in-crime, Jackie O Henderson, inked a deal reportedly worth a staggering $200 million. Yes, you heard that right – $200 million.

But the real kicker as far as Price is concerned? The show is expanding to Melbourne next year, leaving the current breakfast hosts, Jason Hawkins and Lauren Phillips, with a one-way ticket to radio oblivion.

In a tearful farewell on their Melbourne morning show, Phillips lamented: "This is certainly not the way we wanted to bow out."

Price, the unsolicited guardian of Melbourne's radio sensibilities, didn't hold back in his assessment of Sandilands, calling him a "grubby buffoon" and then backpedaling to settle on "just a grub".

“Kyle’s a grubby buffoon," Price said to the bemused panel on a recent episode of The Project. "And I don’t think grubby buffoons work in Melbourne. I probably shouldn’t call him a grubby buffoon. He’s just a grub.”

Price also predicted that Melbourne might not be ready for the explicit nature of the Kyle and Jackie O Show. “Some of the sexually explicit material is off-putting," he explained. "Sarah [Harris] would know better than anyone else that it’s school drop-off time for kids. You don’t want people talking about anal sex at breakfast time, in my view. That’s what they do on that show.

"Melbourne people are not going to embrace that. Look, the company that is putting them on the air has a different view to that, and I may be proven to be completely wrong, but that doesn’t happen very often.”

Despite Price's dire predictions, Sandilands remains unfazed, his ageless charm apparently defying the laws of time. Given that the $200 million deal extends for the next ten years, that would put Sandilands well into his sixties – quite a challenging age for a "shock jock" to remain relevant.

“Can a 60-year-old be smutty?” Price was asked by the panel. “I don’t think they can, and that is part of the problem,” he replied. “But Kyle seems to be ageless. I don’t know how, with that unhealthy lifestyle he has. But he doesn’t seem to age much. So perhaps he can, at 62 . . . You can’t imagine he’s going to be appealing to the 18 to 28-year-old demographic that the radio station is paying him to drag in. I find that really puzzling.”

So brace yourselves, Melbourne: the radio waves are about to get a whole lot grubbier, buffoonier and possibly more explicit. It's the Kyle Sandilands extravaganza, and no amount of Price's disapproval can stop the buffoonery.

Images: KIIS FM / Network 10

Harry Connick Jnr finally comes clean on feud with Kyle

Kyle Sandilands and Harry Connick Jr. have hashed out their rumoured ongoing feud, calling a truce live on air.

The radio shock jock welcomed the singer on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Wednesday morning to discuss his upcoming Australian tour, when Sandilands brought up their long-running beef.

“You know what I admire about Harry, and I’ve watched Harry too,” he told co-host Jackie O when Connick Jr. was on the line.

“When you think some doesn't like you, you watch them, you, over-analyse them and you start getting in your head, ‘I wonder why he doesn’t like me?’”

Kyle then discussed some lessons he had learned from Harry during their time on Australian Idol together, “What I do know about Harry, and he told the Idol contestants this last year, is read the room. You’ve got to perform to whoever is there, whether it’s an auditorium or it’s to three people on a TV show.”

Rather than welcoming the compliment, Connick Jr. thought Sandilands was being sarcastic and "tricky" by stirring the pot.

“I see how tricky you are, slipping in there that I don’t like you,” the star said on air. “I don’t know where you got that from. I do like you very much and I really enjoyed our time together. So I see you trying to flip that in there, but you’re not gonna get that past me, pal.”

Henderson said Sandilands may have been “paranoid”, while he agreed he “misread” the situation.

“So this whole time, I should’ve maybe asked,” he told Connick Jr, who replied: “I love my wife and kids, and I’ve been very lucky in may career. Life is too short for any kind of … I just love life. So when you say I don’t like you, I’m not sure where that comes from, but for the record, I do like you very much and so everything is cool from my end.”

While he accepted the explanation, Sandilands also remained slightly sceptical because Connick Jr “is a very good actor” after all, he said.

“But Kyle the thing about actors is we don’t lie – we tell the truth,” replied Connick Jr.

“You gotta tell the truth in the scene because, if you’re lying, you’re not being true to your character.”

Sandilands then urged listeners to forget “everything I’ve ever said about Harry”.

Image credits: KIIS FM / Getty Images

John Laws hangs up in disgust on Kyle and Jackie O

The radio waves became a battlefield this morning as the titans of Australian talkback clashed in a dramatic showdown involving corset dresses, colon procedures – and a surprise departure for medical attention.

The day kicked off with Jackie O making a grand entrance, albeit a slightly woozy one, having undergone surgery to bid farewell to a cervical polyp. Kyle, ever the supportive co-host, explained to listeners that Jackie was feeling under the weather and experiencing some tingling in her arm. (Because, as you know, corset dresses and surgery recovery are a match made in radio heaven.)

"She just stepped out for a lay down. She’s got like a corset dress on and she had an operation yesterday," Kyle explained, giving us all a mental image of a radio host napping in style.

But that was just the appetiser. The main course featured none other than radio legend John Laws, who decided to play hardball with the hosts in a dramatic fashion. Scheduled for an interview to celebrate an impressive 70 years on-air, Laws decided he'd had enough after catching wind of Jackie O's surgical – and, let's face it, highly graphic – revelations.

Jackie O explained to a bemused Kyle that her surgeon had operated on her “via the colon or the vagina, I’m not sure which... What must I have looked like on the operating table? Nude, shower cap...”

Now, let's take a moment to appreciate the delicacy of the situation. Laws, a seasoned broadcaster, chose that exact moment to hang up on the dynamic duo faster than you can say "corset controversy". Apparently, the mere thought of following that "real" a discussion about medical procedures, particularly those involving the nether regions, was way too much for his delicate radio palate.

In an unexpected turn of events, Laws' assistant then became the unwilling messenger between the offended radio icon and and the KIISFM hosts. “Is it true he got angry about Jackie’s disgusting story?” Kyle asked. The assistant revealed that Laws "just doesn’t like it, Jackie. He doesn’t like following all that talk about vaginas." A sentiment we're sure many have echoed when trying to enjoy their morning coffee.

But the cherry on top was Laws hanging up not once, but twice! Cementing forever his stance on steering clear of on-air discussions involving surgical escapades.

Jackie O valiantly defended herself, insisting it wasn't gratuitous and was, in fact, a perfectly normal chat about a medical procedure. Laws, unmoved, made it clear he had no interest in such shenanigans.

As if that weren't enough drama for one day, Jackie O had to bow out early due to feeling unwell, prompting Kyle to make a mercy call to Laws on-air to explain the situation. Laws, ever the gentleman, softened his stance, admitting he was just surprised at the talk and muttering a nonchalant "never mind".

After that morning of medical misadventures, corset calamities and a radio veteran hanging up, who would have guessed that a discussion about surgery could cause such a ruckus?

Images: KIISFM / X

Kyle Sandilands took a savage swipe at 2GB radio host Ben Fordham on Thursday morning, after his KIIS FM show with Jackie O won this year's radio ratings.

The Kyle and Jackie O show was ranked the number one breakfast show over Fordham's show five out of seven times in this year's surveys, with Fordham coming in close second with a 16.2 per cent share compared to the duo's 16.3 per cent share.

"If you want to know what happened to Ben Fordham, he is underneath us," Sandilands said during his show on Thursday.

"It's like having sex with someone and they die. That's Ben. Ben is the dead person."

After the savage swipe, Sandilands gave a shout out to all of the employees working with him.

"Once again, to our own staff, I've got to thank you all. We retain the number one overall position as the largest greatest most listened to radio show in the history of Australian radio," he added.

As his colleagues cheered and applauded in the studio, Sandilands added: "Calm down now. So the biggest most listened to show ever in the entire history of radio, we are that.

"Also the biggest radio station in the country well done for the whole team."

The Kyle and Jackie O show have 797,000 people tuning in each week, with KIIS 1065 ranked as the number one radio station in Sydney.

"It's another fantastic day for us at ARN," their Chief Content Officer Duncan Campbell said in a statement.

"The positive momentum from the last survey has continued and it's great to see Kyle and Jackie O maintain their lead over Ben Fordham on 2GB."

"The pair have had a phenomenal year – they not only remain unbeaten as the #1FM Breakfast show but have now held the #1 overall spot in Sydney for five out of seven surveys this year, meaning they've officially won 2023!" he added.

The last time 2GB's Ben Fordham Live beat K the duo in radio ratings was in July, after months of coming in close.

Fordham and Sandilands are actually good friends behind the scenes despite roasting and playing pranks on each other.

Images: Instagram/ KIIS FM/ 2GB

Shock on-air resignation plunges Kyle and Jackie O show into chaos

The Kyle and Jackie O Show has been thrown into disarray after a key player in the production announced their shock resignation live on air.

On Friday, one of the show’s producers unexpectedly quit in the middle of the broadcast, shocking the radio hosts.

Kyle and Jackie O were presenting their show as normal when their producer Kayla, who uses they/them pronouns, made the bombshell announcement.

Upon hearing the news of their departure, Kyle was so shocked by it he spilled the coffee they were handing him onto the computer, short circuiting the system and taking them off the air.

“It’s Friday and the radio show is half broken,” Sandilands shared.

“We're in a weird studio because I knocked coffee all down the computers. Non-binary Kayla came in and gave me the very sad news,” he later told listeners once the technical difficulties had been resolved.

“They're abandoning us to live their own life. As they were handing the coffee over I grabbed it and was in such shock I spilt it all over the equipment.”

Sandilands and Henderson said they didn’t know what was going on as equipment kept beeping and going off left, right and centre, and the second studio they were moved to “also failed”.

“It wasn’t just you with the coffee Kyle, something crazy is going on here,” Henderson said. “None of our studios work, the sensor machine is beeping … it’s just crazy.”

The shocking incident pulled the show off the airwaves for more than an hour, as technicians were called in to fix the coffee-covered equipment.

They were eventually let back into their original studio but were sat among “wires everywhere”.

“It’s like we’re on M*A*S*H,” Henderson joked. “We’re in an army tent and we’ve got some little box here that’s apparently broadcasting to air.”

“Maybe I shouldn’t have said it”: Kyle lets slip his Idol salary on air

In a surprising turn of events, radio shock jock and KIIS FM star Kyle Sandilands has unintentionally spilled the beans about his substantial salary for the revamped Australian Idol during a recent episode of The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

The revelation came during an interview with pop sensation Dean Lewis, where Sandilands, in a candid moment, discussed the financial perks of his television gig.

The conversation began innocently enough, with Sandilands expressing his frustrations about the time commitment required for television work. It was then that Lewis, in a light-hearted manner, probed the radio presenter on why he had taken on the role in the first place.

Sandilands, initially reluctant to reveal the figures, eventually gave in to the curiosity and admitted, "Listen, it's clearly over a million dollars for three months of work; you'd be a fool not to do it."

However, Sandilands quickly followed up his revelation with a note of uncertainty about whether he was allowed to discuss his salary publicly. He admitted, "I don't know how much they're paying the others, so maybe I shouldn't have said it."

Lewis responded with astonishment, acknowledging that it was, indeed, a substantial sum. “That is a lot of money," he said. "That’s actually epic.”

This salary disclosure comes at a pivotal time for the Australian Idol franchise, as it undergoes significant changes in its judging panel and strives to recapture its former glory. For the series reboot last year, which aired on Channel 7, international music stars Meghan Trainor and Harry Connick Jr. joined the panel, giving it a fresh look. However, they did not return for the 2024 season. In their place, veteran judge Marcia Hines has made a triumphant return to the hot seat, two decades after being part of the original panel when the show debuted in 2003. This time, she joins Sandilands and Amy Shark on the judging panel.

The rebooted Australian Idol faced challenges during its initial run, struggling to attain the ratings it had achieved during its heyday. Upon its premiere in January, the show consistently trailed behind its timeslot competitors, Married At First Sight and Australian Survivor.

Toward the end of the series, it was attracting an average of approximately 409,000 viewers across the five major metropolitan areas, in stark contrast to the 835,000 viewers for MAFS and 536,000 for Australian Survivor.

To make matters more challenging, the winning singer from the show's reboot failed to make a significant impact on the pop charts, further highlighting the hurdles that the revamped Australian Idol faces.

Images: Australian Idol
